Quirky Quirks!

by Junebug

I have quirks!  I’m sure you do too, right?  Let’s see if you find my quirks strange.

If I eat small things like M&Ms, I have to eat them two at a time.  One for each side of my mouth.   When I was a child I was worried about hurting the feelings of the teeth on the side I didn’t use as much so I developed a habit of what I would call Even Eating.  It is only fair after all.

I loathe onions but I love onion rings.

I love to go to fish places not because I like fish (I don’t) but because they always have the best rolls.

I have to go the bathroom right before I get into bed.  If my husband talks to me for a while or something I have to go again.  I, also, have to go right before watching a movie or I will not make it through the movie.

I still avoid stepping on cracks so I won’t break my mother’s back even though she is already dead.

I make words up all the time.  My husband said to me he was worried one day he will wake up and not be able to understand me at all.

For instance:  Several of my ancestors were German and I grew up strongly Irish and German Catholic which means my vocab can be a little unusual.  We always say the German word, Gesundheit, which means Good Health to You when someone sneezes.  It is or should be pronounced [ɡəˈzʊntˈhaıt] or for those not so good with IPA it sounds like “gazoontite”.   Well, a few months ago when Baby Bug started sneezing I suddenly completely forgot how to say Gesundheit.  I racked my brain and instead of looking it up on Google like a normal person I just guessed.  I started saying Guttenstein.  It really doesn’t sound anything like Gesundheit.  We were in the car and Baby Bug sneezed and I said, “Guttenstein.”

My husband started laughing.  ”What the hell did you say?”

Me:  ”Guttenstein?   Why?  Is that not right?  I forgot how to say it.”

Hubby:  ”Obviously!  It is Gesundheit.”

Me: “Oh, that’s right!  I couldn’t remember.”

Hubby:  ”So you just made it up.  You are amazing.”

Me:  ”I know.”

Our family now says Guttenstein when someone sneezes.

Another word I made up:  Lasterday (it is the same as yesterday but more accurate because yesterday is the last day right?)

What are your quirks?  Do you find me too quirky?  Is there a line where quirks become crazy?

Great post – what fun. I’m sure I don’t have any quirks. But no, you’re not allowed to ask my husband for confirmation! :)

In a hundred years there will be those who look back and study for a degree in the Junebug language…… :)

My husband says the same thing. He feels linguists should just follow me around and study my every word.

I do the same thing with M&M’s, Skittles, and other bite sized candies. I have to eat them in even numbers, so both sides of my mouth have the same amount. And I like dividing M&M’s and Skittles into their individual colors, then picking out an assortment (in an even number) to eat. Yes, I’m the definition of quirky.

I do the color thing, too! I didn’t want to sound too quirky so I just mentioned the even thing. I really need things to be even. It is a quirk.

I like “Guttenstein”:) And I think quirkiness is almost always a good thing. It means that you don’t have to swim with the rest of the fish, you can kind of blaze your own path.

I have many quirks. But they occasionally border on OCD:)

I’m not a huge fan of raw onions myself, but cooked onions (especially the deep fried ones) are a-okay! Weird, but glad to know I’m not the only one.

Quirks are what make us awesome. Sure, there is a fine line between quirk and crazy, but balancing it is so much fun!

Just swinging through from A to Z. Good luck on the rest of the challenge!
